AT LAST A REPORT FOR 2013!!!!

It was catch up time at Clywedog over the May Bank Holiday as we caught up on delayed events due to the appalling weather in March, which caused postponements to the Calendar.

Sunday was the Class Tray races with 2 results to count from 3 races overall.

A strong fleet of ten dinghies came to the line in gusty conditions with a freshening breeze forecast to arrive later in the day.

The first race overall winner was young sailor Rosie Feely age 14 in Topper 22286 by just a few seconds on handicap from Mike & Jane Install in Flying Fifteen 3377 with Mick Edwards FF 3365 crewed by Paul Feely in 3rd place .

The 2nd race after lunch in the now quite gusty conditions saw Rosie Feely in the Topper 22286 win on handicap from Mick Edwards and Rosie's dad Paul in FF 3365 with Mike & Jane Install 3rd in FF3377.

Race 3 was even more frantic which saw the two fifteens in 1st & 2nd and Keith Rollinson in the Wayfarer 3rd.

The Overall Class result gave wins for

Rosie Feely in the Topper class 2nd Steff Feely

Mike Install Flying Fifteen 2nd Mick Edwards

Keith Rollinson Handicap 2nd Ben Johnson

Jonathon Harrington Challenger Trimaran.

Monday dawned with wall to wall sunshine but no wind for the re-scheduled Easter Cup races but by 11:00 a light Easterly was ruffling the surface so battle commenced.

Again a very strong Junior contingent who were putting all the winter training to good effect and giving the old stagers of Clywedog a run for their money.

Rosie Feely( Age 14) in her Topper 22286 was consistent again and scored a 1st place on handicap from Mick Edwards and Paul Feely in FF 3365 with Chris Dartnell in his Laser 3000 in 3rd.

A much better wind after lunch for Races 2 and 3 with Rosie getting another first in Race 2 with Mick Edwards and Dad Paul Feely in FF3365 in 2nd with Ben Johnson – Rolfe (age 15) in Laser 193266 in 3rd.

Rosie with two firsts was assured of the Cup but the minor places were up for grabs and there was much changing of places in the last race of the day with Mike & Jane Install in FF3377getting their 1st win of the day, 2nd to Craig Rytz (Junior) in Laser 107195 and Keith Rollinson and Peter Jackson in the Wayfarer in 3rd.

Easter Cup final results.

CYRC  Lyn Brenig 15th Sept

Link to My Newtoen report

Clywedog cadets were out in force at Lyn Brenig  near Ruthin  for the third of five junior events being held in Nth Wales during 2012.   Clywedog cadets had 12 dinghies  out of a total of 88 boats on the water  and enjoyed an excellent days racing in light winds.

We had entries in the Topper fleet and General Handicap.

Clywedog came away with a clean sweep in the Silver Topper fleet taking  all three podium places.

1st    Rosie Feely   2nd Ben Johnston-Rolfe    3rd  Abi Roberts.

There was some keen competition in the Handicap fleet with some of the Welsh Squad sailing and though  Team Clywedog

juniors were not on the podium we were in the top half of the fleet.

A great effort as this is  only Team Clywedog's  second year of entering this series.

The next event is at Port Dinorwic followed by an inland meeting at Shotwick in Mid-October.

Jim Janes (Pico)2nd in all 2 races, retired hurt race 3
Tim Platt (Laser) 3rd in races 1 & 2 lots of swimming.

All the entries did extremely well in very gusty conditions which tested everyone including the experienced helms who joined in the racing. Well done to Zac for giving Keith(in a Pico this time) a good run and beating him in race 1 as well.

Great day, shame about the turnout.

A fantastic weekend with 11 visiting boats enjoying fine racing, fellowship, food.

Large visiting field at Clywedog

  -

altEleven visiting boats joined the local fleet of mainly Flying Fifteens at Clywedog for the CVRDA Open.

The first race on the Saturday was sailed in a fresh breeze and bright sunshine amid Clywedog scenery at its very best. Roger Devereux and Garry Rucklidge sailing Garry's Rocket (pre-amalgamation with the Merlins) was recalled at the start whilst those in the know headed for the left hand shore up the beat.

At the windward mark the two home Flying Fifteens of Keith Rollinson and Rodney Townsend and Paul Watson and Paul Morris led, chased by the International Moth of Lyndon Beasley. Down the reaches and runs to the bottom mark Peter Vinton's Finn played catch up and moved into the lead on the next lap with Lyndon, both extending on the third lap.

The conditions for the second race looked similar but big holes and wind shifts made for a very different race. The Flying Fifteens of Keith and Paul got well away in front to win on handicap (based on 1965 PYs with adjustments for boat age and beauty).

On Sunday, three races were held in lighter breezes with many holes. The forecasted heavy rain didn't show and the cloud gradually cleared away to sunshine. The very well sailed Merlin of Chris and Lois Barlow enjoyed the conditions and moved to the front of the fleet with Roger and Garry's Rocket close behind but Peter managed to get his Finn close enough to win on corrected time in all three races.

     Spring Series Race 1-3

Despite the return to winter temperatures 10 dinghies came to the line for Races 1-3 in the spring series.

A great turnout from "Team Clywedog Cadets" who were out in force to give the oldies a run for their money.

It was the more experienced helms who prevailed in the shifty conditions however  with a battle royal between the three flying fifteens and the lone vintage Pegasus designed by the great Uffa Fox first launched in 1965( only a little younger than its crew).

Race 1  1st Pegasus 199  Keith Rollinson & Don Millborrow by just 30secs form in 2nd Paul Watson & Paul Morris ff 2127 and only 12secs adrift in  3rd Mick Edwards & Andrew Watson ff3365.  The first Junior home was Rosie Feely in a Topper in 5th.

Race 2 was another close fought battle with the two Pauls in ff2127 coming in 1st by 8secs from Edwards/Watson ff3365 with the Pegasus 199 of Rollinson/Milborrow in third.  1st junior was Rosie Feely again in 5th place.

The wind had freshened for Race 3 which saw some close calls with the water but all crews  managed to keep relatively dry.  The victors this time were Edwards /Watson in ff3365 with Howard Morgan ff3278 getting into the points in 2nd just a few secs ahead of  Rollinson/Millborrow in Pegasus 199 third again.  1st cadet in race 3 was Zac Orewaha in a topper.

Next weekend we have a full programme with Cadets & team racing on Sat followed by a quiz and social, Sundays i3 races  for the Easter Cup and on Monday races 4-6 of the Spring Series.

TRAINING /ONBOARD/CADETS

Welcome to the new sailing season! At long last the snows have melted from Clywedog and it is time to take a look at what is going on at Clywedog Sailing Club this Year. The good news about the coaching this year is that it is not just focussed on the young sailors but all ages! So if you are nine or ninety and would like to learn how to sail or to improve your sailing it is time to join in with what is going on at Clywedog Sailing Club!

Throughout the Saturdays of April there will be a focus on our young racers getting them ready for the Youth and Junior Championships in Pwllheli at the end of the month. As from the begining of May throughout the rest of the season, nearly every Saturday will have two coaching streams going on, a beginners group and a more advanced group. The only weeks where we will not be sailing at the club is when we will be suporting the Regattas aroud Wales.

The beginners group will be run through Onboard and will be working through the RYA Youth Sailing Scheme. The cost for the beginners group will vary between £10 and £15 with the breakdown as follows: £10 for the tuition, £2.50 if you need to borrow a boat and £2.50 if you need to borrow a wetsuit, bouyancy aid, or cag.
The advanced group will be run through a combination of Cadets and Onboard Peer Coaching. The main aim is to take those who can sail a boat and look at how to sail them more efficiently, there will be a reasonable ammount of race training along with some more fun activities. The cost for the advanced sessions are between £5 and £10 with the following breakdown: £5 for tuition, £2.50 if you need to borrow a boat and £2.50 if you need to borrow a wetsuit, bouyancy aid, or cag.

There will also be racing most Sundays throughout the season. There is a good level of competition coming through the club at the moment, but we would also like to have a welcoming atmosphere for first time racers. The bonus of the Sunday racing is that it is FREE! To help support those who would like to take part in the racing this year, the third and forth Sundays of the month will have a coach to assist anyone who would like help with their racing.

If you are not wanting to join in with racing but would just like to have a sail with safety cover then please feel free to make use of the safety cover available on Sundays.

After the success of the topper and laser squads last year, with a number of our young sailors being selected for the WYA Squads, we will be continuing with them this year. The Topper Squad will be run by Matt Osborne Hill and the Laser Squad by Steve Gamman. To gain entry to one of the squads you need to have access to one of these specific boats and be able to sail at roughly RYA Youth Stage 2. If you can say yes to both of those requirements then please contact the relevant coach to check if there is space within the squads. We will have a focus on Racing and getting the most out of our specific craft. The cost of each squad session is £2.50.

For details of when the laser squad is running please contact Steve Gamman.

The Topper Squad will start on Thursday 18 April and will aim to run every week through to the end of the season. The session WILL START at 18:30 with a briefing. Please be changed and rigged ready to go onto the water straight after the briefing or you will be wasting your session! We will aim to finish the session at 20:30.

If there is enough interest we can also look at running a general handicap single handed, general handicap double handed, and opi squads. Please do not hessitate to contact Matt Osborne Hill for more details on this.

Clywedog Sailing Club is a proud supporter of Sailability, which focuses not on a disability but on peoples individual abilities and matches that with specifically designed boats. When asked to help somebody onto the water we have never not been able to achieve this! Sailability can be organised on request with Keith Rollinson.

For the adults joining in with the Onboard beginers sessions, we will be following the RYA Youst Stage awards, which is similar to the adult RYA Levels, but unfortunatly do not match up enough to be able to sign them off. If you would like to make your training more formal and attend any of the adult courses then please contact Matt Osborne Hill to discuss dates and prices for the courses. The courses available are RYA Level 1, RYA Level 2, RYA Level 3, Sailing With Spinakers, Seamanship Skills, Start Racing and Intermediate Racing. Discounted prices are available for Clywedog Sailing Club Members.

Just a quick thought:

Everybody, Somebody, Anybody, and Nobody

This is a little story about four
people named Everybody,
Somebody, Anybody, and
Nobody.
There was an important job to
be done and Everybody was
sure that Somebody would do it.
Anybody could have done it, but Nobody did it.
Somebody got angry about that because it was Everybody's
job.
Everybody thought that Anybody
could do it, but Nobody realised that
Everybody wouldn't do it.
It ended up that Everybody blamed
Somebody when Nobody did what
Anybody could have done!

On a more serious note WE NEED YOUR HELP! The above is a summary of what we would like to be running at the club this year, but it is all being run by the same couple of people with the same couple of helpers every week. To sustain both quality and availabilty of the training available at the club this year we need your help. If every parent could fit in at least one day of helping throughout the season it will help to spread the load for those who can do it more regularly. To find out where you can help please contact Keith Rollinson for the Cadets or Matt Osborne Hill for Onboard. We will be only to willing to guide you in how you can help us at the club. We will never say no to too much help as it will allow us to contiue to improve the service that we give which in turn will help our sailors being coached.

Also more of a call to our young sailors, this year will see the start of the Onboard Peer Coaching. So we will give one of our young sailors a session that they can then deliver to the other sailors in the group. If you fancy doing this you will be supported by a parent each week, who will either drive the powerboat for you or if you have done your powerboat level 2 you can drive the boat with their support. If you would like to have a go at the peer coaching then please contact Matt Osborne Hill.

If you would like support with helping us there are a wide range of courses that we can either run at the club or can be offered at discounted rates with Plas Menai. These courses include, Powerboat Level 2, Safety Boat, Powerboat Instructor, Assistant Instructor, Dinghy Instructor, Advanced Endorsment, Senior Instructor, & Race Coach Level 2.
