Clywedog cadets were out in force at Lyn Brenig  near Ruthin  for the third of five junior events being held in Nth Wales during 2012.   Clywedog cadets had 12 dinghies  out of a total of 88 boats on the water  and enjoyed an excellent days racing in light winds.

We had entries in the Topper fleet and General Handicap.

Clywedog came away with a clean sweep in the Silver Topper fleet taking  all three podium places.

1st    Rosie Feely   2nd Ben Johnston-Rolfe    3rd  Abi Roberts.

There was some keen competition in the Handicap fleet with some of the Welsh Squad sailing and though  Team Clywedog

juniors were not on the podium we were in the top half of the fleet.

A great effort as this is  only Team Clywedog's  second year of entering this series.

AT LAST A REPORT FOR 2013!!!!

It was catch up time at Clywedog over the May Bank Holiday as we caught up on delayed events due to the appalling weather in March, which caused postponements to the Calendar.

Sunday was the Class Tray races with 2 results to count from 3 races overall.

A strong fleet of ten dinghies came to the line in gusty conditions with a freshening breeze forecast to arrive later in the day.

The first race overall winner was young sailor Rosie Feely age 14 in Topper 22286 by just a few seconds on handicap from Mike & Jane Install in Flying Fifteen 3377 with Mick Edwards FF 3365 crewed by Paul Feely in 3rd place .

The 2nd race after lunch in the now quite gusty conditions saw Rosie Feely in the Topper 22286 win on handicap from Mick Edwards and Rosie's dad Paul in FF 3365 with Mike & Jane Install 3rd in FF3377.

Race 3 was even more frantic which saw the two fifteens in 1st & 2nd and Keith Rollinson in the Wayfarer 3rd.

The Overall Class result gave wins for

Rosie Feely in the Topper class 2nd Steff Feely

Mike Install Flying Fifteen 2nd Mick Edwards

Keith Rollinson Handicap 2nd Ben Johnson

Jonathon Harrington Challenger Trimaran.

Monday dawned with wall to wall sunshine but no wind for the re-scheduled Easter Cup races but by 11:00 a light Easterly was ruffling the surface so battle commenced.

Again a very strong Junior contingent who were putting all the winter training to good effect and giving the old stagers of Clywedog a run for their money.

Rosie Feely( Age 14) in her Topper 22286 was consistent again and scored a 1st place on handicap from Mick Edwards and Paul Feely in FF 3365 with Chris Dartnell in his Laser 3000 in 3rd.

A much better wind after lunch for Races 2 and 3 with Rosie getting another first in Race 2 with Mick Edwards and Dad Paul Feely in FF3365 in 2nd with Ben Johnson – Rolfe (age 15) in Laser 193266 in 3rd.

Rosie with two firsts was assured of the Cup but the minor places were up for grabs and there was much changing of places in the last race of the day with Mike & Jane Install in FF3377getting their 1st win of the day, 2nd to Craig Rytz (Junior) in Laser 107195 and Keith Rollinson and Peter Jackson in the Wayfarer in 3rd.

A fantastic weekend with 11 visiting boats enjoying fine racing, fellowship, food.

Large visiting field at Clywedog

  -

altEleven visiting boats joined the local fleet of mainly Flying Fifteens at Clywedog for the CVRDA Open.

The first race on the Saturday was sailed in a fresh breeze and bright sunshine amid Clywedog scenery at its very best. Roger Devereux and Garry Rucklidge sailing Garry's Rocket (pre-amalgamation with the Merlins) was recalled at the start whilst those in the know headed for the left hand shore up the beat.

At the windward mark the two home Flying Fifteens of Keith Rollinson and Rodney Townsend and Paul Watson and Paul Morris led, chased by the International Moth of Lyndon Beasley. Down the reaches and runs to the bottom mark Peter Vinton's Finn played catch up and moved into the lead on the next lap with Lyndon, both extending on the third lap.

The conditions for the second race looked similar but big holes and wind shifts made for a very different race. The Flying Fifteens of Keith and Paul got well away in front to win on handicap (based on 1965 PYs with adjustments for boat age and beauty).

On Sunday, three races were held in lighter breezes with many holes. The forecasted heavy rain didn't show and the cloud gradually cleared away to sunshine. The very well sailed Merlin of Chris and Lois Barlow enjoyed the conditions and moved to the front of the fleet with Roger and Garry's Rocket close behind but Peter managed to get his Finn close enough to win on corrected time in all three races.

     Spring Series Race 1-3

Despite the return to winter temperatures 10 dinghies came to the line for Races 1-3 in the spring series.

A great turnout from "Team Clywedog Cadets" who were out in force to give the oldies a run for their money.

It was the more experienced helms who prevailed in the shifty conditions however  with a battle royal between the three flying fifteens and the lone vintage Pegasus designed by the great Uffa Fox first launched in 1965( only a little younger than its crew).

Race 1  1st Pegasus 199  Keith Rollinson & Don Millborrow by just 30secs form in 2nd Paul Watson & Paul Morris ff 2127 and only 12secs adrift in  3rd Mick Edwards & Andrew Watson ff3365.  The first Junior home was Rosie Feely in a Topper in 5th.

Race 2 was another close fought battle with the two Pauls in ff2127 coming in 1st by 8secs from Edwards/Watson ff3365 with the Pegasus 199 of Rollinson/Milborrow in third.  1st junior was Rosie Feely again in 5th place.

The wind had freshened for Race 3 which saw some close calls with the water but all crews  managed to keep relatively dry.  The victors this time were Edwards /Watson in ff3365 with Howard Morgan ff3278 getting into the points in 2nd just a few secs ahead of  Rollinson/Millborrow in Pegasus 199 third again.  1st cadet in race 3 was Zac Orewaha in a topper.

Next weekend we have a full programme with Cadets & team racing on Sat followed by a quiz and social, Sundays i3 races  for the Easter Cup and on Monday races 4-6 of the Spring Series.

Welsh Yachting awards

WYA AWARDS

North Wales dominated Welsh Sailing's Big Weekend, getting a clean sweep of all the awards as almost 100 sailors from across Wales attended the get-together to celebrate their sport.

alt

It was a particularly good event for Clwywedog Sailing Club, near Llanidloes, who picked up the Participation Club of the Year award, while Keith Rollinson was the Coach of the Year. Apart from training at Clywedog, Rollinson is also the Sailability co-ordinator, helping disabled sailing throughout Wales.

There were sailing, windsurfing and powerboating instructors, coaches, race officials, volunteers and club representatives at the two day event at the Plas Menai Watersports Centre, the highlight being an awards dinner to recognise some of those who contribute most to Welsh Sailing.

It was also a chance to hear from some of the top speakers from the sailing world, including RYA Training Manager Richard Falk, RYA Coaching Development Manager Mike Hart, while the key note speaker from closer to home was Alan Williams, Plas Menai Centre Manager, on how people learn, demystifying the Human Brain.

Steve Morgan, chief executive of Welsh Sailing, said, ‘The Big Weekend has been a great success and we are delighted at the number of people who attended.

“We plan to build on this momentum and next year hope to make the event even bigger. It is a great way to set up the upcoming year.

“Congratulations to all the winners, there were some really outstanding candidates and it was particularly nice to recognise the work all these people do – usually with no thought of gaining recognition themselves.”

Apart from Rollinson and Clywedog, Felinheli/ Port Dinorwic were the performance club of the year, while Mary Gowers of Llandudno and John Hulse of Bala received special achievement awards.

Clywedog's success is one of those remarkable stories of a sports club reinventing itself in adversity, as they triumphed over Fishguard and Port Dinorwic to claim the award.

The North Powys club was struggling a few years ago, but have introduced the OnBoard scheme in a new venture with Staylittle Outdoor Centre so that between them have delivered over 800 first participation opportunities and the club took in 55 new cadet, adult and family members as a result of this hard work.

“The club runs sessions for adult able bodied sailors, cadets, club racing as well as being the main sailability site in the area,” said Morgan.

“Numerous partnerships were established in 2011 with local schools both in the primary and the secondary sector who bring their extracurricular 5x60 groups to the club, Local Authority Special Needs schools and numerous other disadvantaged and disability groups have been welcomed to the club.

“Their year was crowned successfully when the cadet section won the best club award at the inaugural North Wales OnBoard festival – many of these sailors then made the move to competing in the Volvo Welsh Youth and Junior Championships at Pwllheli in September 2011 – participating on a big sea venue for the first time in some cases.”

Rollinson is a key part in that success, but also deserved to be singled out for his contribution locally and across Wales.

“He is not a coach who has athletes travelling across the world winning European and World Championship medals, but an individual who works tiresly and inspires young people to participate and enjoy their sport regardless of their ability and in spite of their disabilities,” said Morgan.

“Keith is a passionate supported of the Sailability programme and is the RYA’s coordinator for the whole of Wales. Keith has been very involved with the programs promoting disability sporting achievements.”

The Performance Club of the Year went to Clwb Hwylio Y Flelinheli/Port Dinorwic Sailing Club, with the junior/youth section winning the top club prize at the North Wales CYRC series, third at the Eric Twiname Team Racing Championships.

Individual club members also had very successful year with 10 junior and Youth members gaining Welsh National squad selection, with four of these gaining selection into the GBR Optimist Squad and 420 Youth Squad, who was fourth in the UK Nationals in the 420 event. There were also plenty of successful adult sailors from the club at national and international level.

There were two special achievEment awards, with Gowers and Hulse being rewarded for the huge numbers of hours of voluntary work they put in.

“I never ceased to be amazed at the dedication and work that volunteers put into sport and it is only right and proper that we recocgnise this contribution and remind ourselves that our clubs and events would not run if we did not get this support,” said Morgan.

“Over the years Mary has volunteered at all of the WYA’s major events held in the North, starting off managing the Beach during Welsh Youth Events, Christmas Regattas etc.

“When her two daughters stopped racing in Wales and went away to University Mary continued to attend major regattas as a volunteer, this time running the Race Office.

“Having been involved in sailing in the North Wales area for so long Mary has decided it was time to take up sailing for herself. She is now learning to sail an Access Dinghy at Clwyedog Sailing Club, which she is thoroughly enjoying.

“John has been involved with Bala since he joined in 1986, during his 26 years he has served the club in many capacities.

“He has taught 100’s of adults and children to sail and brought in many new members into Bala SC. He is now the club president.”
