Sailing’s best kept secret - 615 acres of water within easy reach of both North and South Wales and the Midlands, Clywedog Sailing Club has been at home on Llyn Clywedog since 1968, amid some of the most tranquil and peaceful scenery in Mid Wales.

The lake is some 6 miles long and open to all types of non powered watercraft from canoes and sailboards to dinghies, cruisers and keelboats
In the first week in May we hold an open day,(SEE NEWS SECTION) but throughout the year we welcome visitors. This is our online guide to show you what to expect, and how to get in touch with us.

The dominant class at present is the flying Fifteen fleet but we also have a mix of other dinghies from Toppers to the larger fast trapeze dinghies. We also have a number of cruisers with moorings available close to the clubhouse.

Staylittle Outdoor centre run RYA registered courses throughout the season for Sailing and Powerboat qualifications.We are a RYA registered training Centrem Rya Onboard member See the courses section for dates.

The Montgomery MS Society were able to get funding from the community chest to enable those with less mobility to sail using the Access dinghies which Staylittle/Clywedog now have available and we are registered Sailability site. also this year we have 2 x Challenger Trimarans for those who want a bit more speed.  See the Sailability section on the site.

We run a sucessful Cadet Section open to Juniors 8yrs - 18yrs  which is held  every Saturday  of each month throughout the season. We currently use Staylittle Outdoors Centre  fleet of Pico's, Funboats and Stratos. and club Feva's and Toppers We are also now part of the RYA Onboard scheme

Club History

Clywedog Sailing club was formed in the late 1960’s by a number of local sailing enthusiasts whilst the Dam was being constructed. The Club House was constructed by the then Severn Water Authority and a lease was taken by the Club for exclusive sailing rights on Clywedog in 1968. There was an act in Parliament passed forbidding use of powered craft (except for rescue/ maintenance and emergency) which is still in force today making Clywedog a very peaceful location for Sailing and Fishing(there is a separate club for fishing).

The Clubhouse has been refurbished once since then and recently a major rebuilding project has been completed thanks to a NOF grant awarded jointly to Staylittle Outdoor Centre( who use the reservoir for their water based activities)and the Sailing Club. We were also able to purchase a selection of training dinghies to suit from beginners to experienced sailors to polish their skills. We now have a truly modern clubhouse with excellent facilities including full changing,showers,fully fitted kitchen, disabled services and storerooms . Our sailing season runs from Mid March to the end of October as being around 1,000 feet above sea level access is a problem during winter months.

We have an active social and race programme and camping is available on site for members. We are renowned for our hospitality and welcome to visitors.

We have an Open Day in May ( the event is to raise funds for the R.N.L.I ).

We have an open Regatta June 16/17  when other clubs are invited to  join in and stay and we also have weekend visits from other Sailing clubs in the area.

The Old Gaffers association are also visiting again this year in May & July.

Lake Facts

The Llyn Clywedog is a man made reservoir formed by the construction of the Clywedog Dam. The dam was built between 1965-67 to regulate the flow of water in the Severn, both as a protection against flooding of the upper sections of the river during the winter months and also to ensure the maintenance of a minimum flow in the river during the summer. 

The lake has a surface area of 615 acres (230 football pitches), is 216 ft deep at its maximum depth and stretches in all a distance of some six miles.

The construction of the dam and lake throw up a number of interesting statistics. The structure is the tallest mass concrete dam in Britain, standing fully 236 ft (72m) high. It is 750 ft long, and holds back some 11,000 million gallons of water The weight of concrete used in the construction of the dam is equal to 7 times the tonnage of the QE2 cruise liner, in all some 200,000 cubic metres; enough to build 28 miles of six lane motorway.
